Description
Contemporary 10 cm (4”) applied block sampler, designed and produced by Megan Manwaring .
“ In 2019 and again in 2020, I used the 100 Days Online Project to motivate me to complete one small applied block per day for 100 days. I showed some of them on Instagram as I went along. My two quilts entitled “ Daily Dose of Appliqué ” are the result. Each year, I have imposed on myself a certain type of fabric, both for the background of the blocks (samples of fabrics for shirts in 2019 and moiré cottons in 2020) and for the pieces to be applied (Liberty cotton batistes in 2019 and fabrics of the Kaffe Fassett Collective in 2020).
It was the shirting fabric samples that determined the final size of the blocks: 10cm (4 ″) per side. With these parameters in place, I gave free rein to my imagination and used various techniques, shapes and processes to design blocks inspired by traditional blocks, nature, as well as classical or invented geometric shapes. I also let the fabric speak to me. There are some differences from year to year and this booklet shows you both versions. The layout of the blocks is not the same.
In 2019, I was inspired by the concrete claustra in vogue in the 1960s. In 2020, it was the string piecing technique and the “quarter log cabin” pattern that allowed me to showcase my blocks. This model gives you the necessary explanations for these two types of arrangement. Take the time to read all the explanations carefully before starting your quilt. I hope you have a lot of fun making these blocks. Me, I loved that! “
